Here’s a quick reference for the most common functional parts needed for Whirlpool dryer LER3634EW1. Out of all the parts available for this dryer, 99 times out of 100 the part needed for a repair will come from the following small list of items. If you want to order something featured here just click on it and current price and availability will show on the linked page.

The heating element on this dryer will burn out from time to time. When it does, the dryer will immediately and completely stop producing any heat all. If the element has burned out you should be able to find a physical break in the element wire. If you have a meter handy you can test for continuity… but it’s easy to just take it out and inspect the wire.  Oh yeah, before doing ANYTHING inside ANY appliance, make sure to unplug it first! Here’s what the element looks like (along with a link to a good company you can order it from).

Another common failure for this model dryer is the drum belt. If the belt breaks, the dryer will run (and even get hot) but the drum will not turn. You should be able to hear the motor running… but with no action on the inside.

If you hear a high pitched squeely-squeeky sound when the dryer runs, that’s a good indicator that the idler pulley bearing is gone. The idler pulley is in the bottom of the dryer and the belt runs through it- it provides tension on the belt and keeps it tight against the drum so it can get traction to spin that heavy load of wet clothes. If you’re replacing the belt, it’s not a bad idea to go ahead and replace the idler pulley too.

If the dryer won’t run at all… or runs for a few minutes then stops (especially if you can hear a humming sound coming from the motor) then the motor may be bad.

There is also a high limit thermostat in this dryer. It can also stop the dryer from heating properly.

On the element housing itself there are also a couple of safety thermostats. One is a high limit which will reset and the other is more like a fuse (once it goes, it’s gone). They come as a kit since the highest of the two shouldn’t blow unless the other was also bad.

And, last but not least, there is yet another safety thermostat in this dryer. Clothes dryers can be dangerous creatures (especially when we don’t clean the lint out regularly) so it’s no wonder there is so much attention to safety. Here’s the last safety fuse in this model.

The drum in this dryer rests on a couple of rubber wheels or drum rollers in the back. They do go bad from time to time and you’ll know it when they wear out- it will sound thumpy when running (like you’ve got a tennis shoe loose in the drum). When replacing one it’s always best to replace both so they come in a kit of two.

The lint screen in this dryer can tear over time. It’s crucial to have though so if it’s letting lint through it needs to be replaced… unless you really want a new dryer soon!
